OVERVIEW: The following is a brief summary of the Club’s history.
There was a rugby club in Dingle in the 1970’s which lasted for a couple of years and then disbanded. Dingle is located in West Kerry, one of the strongholds of the G.A.A. and it would have been difficult for any new Rugby Club in Dingle to survive at the time due to the small pool of players to pick from and the dominance of the Kerry Football Team at the time.
1997/98: The origins of the present club date back to the autumn of 1997 when a number of people living locally who had an interest in playing rugby got together and decided and to form a rugby team in West Kerry. West Kerry is located in the Barony of Corca Dhuibhne and hence the name Corca Dhuibhne R.F.C. It is, we believe, the most westerly Rugby Club in Europe and the only Gaeltacht Rugby Club in Ireland. Initially, as we did not have enough players to fill a team ourselves it was decided that we would join and play with the Killarney “B” team for the 1997/98 season and most of the locals who became involved in the team played with Killarney “B” Team that year. This involved league matches and also a cup campaign. The first “unofficial” home game was, in fact, played at the end of the 1997/98 season when Killarney A’s played Killarney B’s – consisting of the Corca Dhuibhne team, although beaten there were celebrations all round. We applied for and obtained Affiliated Status from the Munster Branch I.R.F.U. in March 1998. |
